Character Information
Name:Yuma Tsukumo
Canon: Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL [Anime]
Canon Point: Post-Series
Age: 13 (Mod-Approval)
History: Wikia Link; His history for post series includes ZEXAL I and ZEXAL II, they are considered two different series for Licensing reasons, but they are actually the same (it’s silly, but it’s because of 4kids, what can you do…)
Personality:
Yuma is a cheerful, hyperactive 13 year old with a heart of gold. Though he’s often failing at dueling, school and most of the challenges he sets for himself, he continues to never give up and only uses his failures to press on. This often leads him into being a little reckless, and given his short temper, he tends to be easily provoked (He also fights often with the calmer, more focused Astral). However, when he breaks a promise during his second duel with Shark, he remains depressed for a short while before he gets back up and goes to duel again, making sure to duel for his own self. He never duels for revenge or out of anger because he sees dueling as a means to restore or create bonds with others. This belief comes from Yuma’s desire to see the best in everyone, no matter how bad they are. Even Kaito, who Yuma views originally as a rival, becomes someone that he wants to protect and help, even if Kaito often denies it.
He will also do anything for his friends, even risking his qualification in the World Dueling Championship, to make sure they don’t end up hurt. During many events in the series, Yuma is always placing his friends, family and even his “enemies” before himself. When he duels with someone, he’s often playing magic and trap cards to protect his ally, regardless if they want it or not. A prime example of this is when he was teamed up with Kaito after Haruto was kidnapped. Kaito was constantly denying Yuma’s help, but he often just ignored it and did whatever he wanted anyway.
Not only that, this is an example of Yuma’s extremely stubborn behavior. Giving up is not something Yuma allows, so he often is pressing forward to take action to make sure it doesn’t happen. Not only that, but he tends not to listen to anyone, even Kotori, when he gets an idea in his head. In the series, he uses this stubborn nature to keep challenging himself (or “kattobing” as he calls it) and continues to inspire not only himself but others as well. The best example is his relationship with Tetsuo. When they were children, Yuma would continue to stubbornly make Tetsuo duel with him even though he was continuously losing. This stubbornness that leads to his desire to always challenge himself to succeed, and also what eventually wins Tetsuo over, who originally orchestrated a lot of the bullying Yuma endures in the series.
Even with his “never give up” attitude, Yuma isn’t very competitive. During the first series, Yuma states that his dream to become the World Duel Champion, which ended up being a promise to his father; the one person who believed he could do it. Before the start of the World Duel Carnival, Yuma states that he doesn’t really care if he wins or loses. While Astral expresses concern, (Rightly so, given that if Yuma loses during a Numbers duel Astral will cease to exist) Yuma states that it’s more important to him to create bonds with the people he duels with, not to win or lose. He understands what’s at stake and will win, but his belief in the bonds created from dueling is more important than competition. Yuma values his relationships with people more than anything else. Even so, he still loves to duel, but really uses it for something fun, and he becomes anxious/depressed when it’s no longer fun.
Despite his positive and cheerful nature, Yuma is actually hiding his depression and anxiety. Even though he tends to push through these moments, he sometimes has to be convinced by his friends. Sometimes, he even forgets some of his problematic actions when he’s too focused, anxious or depressed about something, disregarding the moments as “false” or something he would never do. Additionally, when Yuma’s depression or anxiety become too much, he retreats into himself.
When Astral is killed by Black Mist and sent back to the Astral World, Yuma becomes so depressed that he refuses to perform simple things like eating, bathing and sleeping, staying in his attic wrapped in a blanket. His best friend, Kotori, convinces him to leave his room, but he becomes obsessive with finding Astral. This displays a very aggressive part of Yuma not particularly seen much in the series. He pushes himself to go to places that he had dueled with Astral; they were all locations that he had had meaningful moments with him, though Yuma didn’t realize it himself. When later approached about this behavior, he ran away and tried to deny what he was doing.
This particular trait isn’t new to Yuma; he tends to forget about things he does during states of anxiety, or he doesn’t notice them at all. During the WDC, he was stressed about Shark dueling for revenge. When Kotori attempted to cheer him up, Yuma ended up yelling at her out of frustration and anxiety, but later denied that he would do such a thing when he finally realized she had walked off. Essentially, Yuma tends to act aggressive when he is under some kind of pressure, whether self-inflicted or not. It is primarily noticeable when he is experiencing bouts of depression or something is causing anxiety for him. Typically, he is able to snap out of it with some effort, but usually pushes in a “fake it til you make it” type manner because of it.
That being said, Yuma is quick to forgive others due to the fact that he understands how hard it is to be sad (and sometimes recognizes his own bad behaviors). Early in the series, Yuma has the experience of dueling someone who is a known cheater, Tokunosuke. Now, during the duel, Tokunosuke uses tricks and flip effects during the duel to take Yuma’s monsters, but after Yuma defeats him, he doesn’t seem mad. In actuality, he gives the card Tokunosuke gave him as a trick and tells him that he has no hard feelings, as long as the other doesn’t cheat anymore.
Not only that, but Yuma compliments the duelist, something that other people haven’t done before. Yuma forgave someone that everyone else seemed to be wary of (even Yuma’s closest friends were telling him to avoid Tokunosuke). It seems to be a testament of the fact that Yuma tends to forgive people pretty quickly, even if they have wronged him and others due to his own experience. While he doesn’t excuse what people do wrong, he does try to make others feel accepted.
However, Yuma doesn’t really think deeply about his own actions. As he grows in the series, it seems like he thinks and considers situations a little bit more (primarily with the guidance of Astral), he’s not one to consider all options. Not only that, but he’s always the last person to understand things and is often reacting poorly to those situations. When he finds out his parents might still be alive, instead of choosing what to do for Haruto, Kaito and Astral, he tries to run, saying he was going to find his parents. It’s proven later that he is honestly just scared of having to choose, which is a product of his anxiety. Additionally, when Shingetsu (later proven to be an enemy named Vector) convinces him to lie to Astral about certain things. Yuma briefly states he wasn’t sure he wanted to lie to Astral, but do to not thinking to deeply and trusting Shingetsu, he ended up hurting himself and Astral very deeply.
Despite all of the depression and anxiety, Yuma tends to be a ray of sunshine for others. Every person he meets, he changes in some way, either by his honest nature, or by his can do spirit. He is always the one to give a pep talk or tell someone what he feels is right, even if they don’t want to hear it. It’s part of the reason Astral ends up bonding tightly with Yuma. Where he gives up when he doesn’t foresee a chance of success, Yuma presses forward and gives everyone hope and reassurance. It probably helps that he’s incredibly stubborn and doesn’t understand the meaning of the words “No thanks”. During the tag battle with Shark (and later on, Kaito), Yuma is always protecting them, despite them often being surprised by or denying his help.
While he can be quite the handful for his friends and family, Yuma really inspires a lot of individuals to strive to be their best, despite his own issues that he has. Not only that, but with his cheerful and honest nature, Yuma is able to roll into any situation with a smile and continue to “kattobing”.
Abilities & Skills:
Yuma’s primary ability is his athletic prowess. It has been complimented numerous times that he is decent at most sports and physical education. The biggest indicator of this is Yuma is very much a “tumbler” in the sense that he is able to perform parkour level moves. He is able to use momentum to push and kick enemies, which he has used very often. Additionally, he’s the kid who will say “LOOK AT THIS” and do a standing back flip because he can.
In a more magical sense, Yuma has the ability to utilize Shining Draw, an skill that is usually exclusive to Astral Beings only. With this ability, the user is able to create whatever card they want to pull. It is not explained fully why Yuma has this ability, but it is implied that Yuma’s soul is a part of Astral’s that was abandoned a long time ago. When in ZEXAL form (basically a fusion with Astral), Yuma is able to create and materialize weapons, though he does not use this ability often (it has only been used once or twice). When he does make the weapons, he usually has them in card form and applies them to his Ace Monster, Hope.
Inventory/Companions: Yuma will have his deck, King’s Key (necklace), clothes, duel disk and D-Gazer. The King’s Key and the space within it will be completely deactivated in this setting.
Choice: Monster; Puca
Reason: While researching the monsters, I found Puca the most like Yuma. Though normally a goofy kid, Yuma does have the occasional trick or prank, so being a trickster monster would suit him. Additionally, the Puca’s fleet-footed and agile nature leans more towards Yuma’s natural abilities and would be a way to focus more on his physical strengths. However, I also enjoyed that they are honor bound to their word. In the series, Yuma does not once give up on people, even when Astral, who is the most important thing to him, is hurt by that. He has a sense of responsibility when he makes promises, so I thought it would be perfect, as it is a big weakness of Yuma’s already.
Lastly, Yuma’s first reaction is to push through stressful situations, but I would like to see him actually have the fight or flight response (leaning more towards avoiding and running).
